UNIVERSITY SEMINAR --

LIBRARY ASSIGNMENT
This assignment is intended to familiarize you with the basic resources and techniques for using the library.
1. Select a topic from the subject list on the back of this sheet. (Some professors may assign a topic.)
2. You will need to search five resources for information on your topic. (If you choose a controversial subject
for example, global warming --
you should attempt to find sources supporting opposing views.)
Begin your search with the following resources:
- a book in the general LTU collection (other than a reference book)
- a journal article
- a subject encyclopedia (such as Encyclopedia of World Art)
3. Next, locate information on your topic from two of the following resources:
- a general encyclopedia article
- a biographical source (such as, Who’s Who in America)
- a handbook
- an almanac
- a statistical source (such as, Statistical Abstract of the United States)
4. After locating your five resources, create a correct bibliographic citation for each resource.
(See “Resources for Citing Sources” in your workbook).
5. Next, write a separate paragraph summarizing the features of each information source.
State whether this would be a useful resource for writing a paper on your topic
(for example, a statistical source would give you more definitive information than an encyclopedia).
The library staff will be pleased to assist you in all phases of this assignment.
Note: There are limited materials for some of these topics, therefore some resources will be
designated “for in-library use only”. These sources will be marked with yellow tape and shelved
