When I imported something (or course copied something) - the Content ordering is messed up??

If you have imported a package into a Blackboard course (that is, something you exported at one time from other course), or if you Course Copy from one course to another, sometimes the "ordering" of the content areas gets messed up. You usually see that there are buttons missing from the main page - when you look at the "Manage Course" area, you'll find that there are duplicate numbers (and missing numbers) in the ordering of the content areas - here is the solution!

Step 0) First, make sure that there has been time for the material to move over (if you did a course copy) - click refresh a few times. If you see the "errors" showing up in Step 1, then obviously the material has come over, but there are some issue and we have to fix them.

Step 1) Go to the Control Panel in the destination course, and go to the MANAGE COURSE menu. This error shows up in different way, but usually you'll see 1 or 2 missing numbers, and thus 1 or 2 duplicates. In the example below, #3 is missing, but we have two #1s. Now, trust me .. you usually CANNOT just take one of the number 1s and make it a 2 ... you'll just chase the numbers around! The only way to do this consistantly is to make sure that the last name in the list (in this case Tools) is the highest number (it is in this case). Then come up one ..to Communications, that's fine also ... come up .. Staff is fine ... ANNOUNCEMENTS - Move that to #3. Then move EXTERNAL LINKS to #2 - now they are all in a correct numerical order (1-6). We need to get the NUMBERS straightened out first .. THEN we can reorder the content areas if needed.

Step 2) At this point, with the numbers 1-6 correct ... NOW you can shift around the content areas if you wish - like move Announcement to 1 (the others will shift down correctly).
