For "Course Objectives Evaluations" - you might choose to pick one from a list of surveys that have been generated in the NatSciLaptop Site in Blackboard. These are the steps for how to copy the surveys to your course page and deploy them (make them available to the students).
Note: much of this involves copying material from one course to another, so it is similar to this help page/technique - but the deployment info at the bottom is specific to surveys.
A) First - we need to find the "Course ID" - so go to your Course Listings in Blackboard, and find that text string next to Course ID: - we are going to want to type that into another input box in a different course - so either write it down, or press CTRL-C to copy it to the windows "clipboard". |
B) Now, switch to the Blackboard course that has the survey you want (you will need to have access to the particular course). In this case, all NatSci faculty are connected to this Organization, so all the surveys are stored here. Enter the site (in this case NatSciLaptop Site). |
C) Go to the Control Panel for that site, and select the ORGANIZATION COPY from the lower left options box. |
D) Click the link shown (probably the only link available). |
E) Here is where we need to type or paste in the destination ID ... pressing CTRL-V will paste the data in if you copied it above. Also, make sure you click the TESTS, SURVEYS, and POOLS item (but everything else can remain unchecked). When you are done, click SUBMIT at the bottom of the page, and then click OK on the next page. The surveys should have been sent over to the new course! {Side note - if you look closely, the id changed in the two images ... I realized that I might as well copy the surveys over to a course where I need it, so I reselected a different destination course id. Just in case you noticed and worried about it!) |
F) Now switch back to your courses list and select the destination course. Go to the control panel for the course. You need a place to post the survey that we have moved over. You might want to just add a link to Course Documents - or create a new Content Area for the survey - or use another existing content area - doesn't matter where you put it, as long as you tell the students where it will be! {In this case, I'm just going to put it in External Links.} |
G) Mostly when we add stuff to a content area, we use the buttons on the left side of the screen. If you look over at the far right side, there is the +Select dropdown box - select SURVEY from the list and then click the GO button. |
H) Here's where we get to see if the surveys came over properly! You should see a list of various surveys (whatever was created in the original source blackboard course). The survey you wish to use is presumably in this list - so select it, and then click the SUBMIT button. Then click OK on the next screen (it has now "copied" the particular survey to the content area, and will now present you with the options to configure it). (At some point, you might want to get rid of other surveys that you don't need - you would go to a different area of the control panel to do that .. info should be included later in the document to explain that.) |
I) At this point, we need to set up some features of the survey (specific to this being a Course Objectives survey - you might use different options for a different type of survey). Select the Modify the Survey Options link. [If you needed to add/remove questions to the survey (probably not) - you could click the Modify the Survey link.] |
J) Most recommended options are shown here. These are specific to a Course Objectives survey [we want it to be anonmymous, but we want to know has taken the survey ... we can't connect their answers to the student names - but we want to know all the answers]. You can look at the other choices and see if there is something else you might want to set (for example, you could set the start/stop date for the survey - just make sure the "link available" is checked if you do the start stop. So, if you don't set start/stop, the "link available" would control if the students see the link. |
K) Depending on how you set the "link available" - your students will be able to see/take the survey (top of image) or not see/take it (bottom of image). Notice, in the control panel, you can obviously still access both surveys to make changes. |
L) Just in case you wanted to "clean up" (totally not required - these surveys don't take up much space) - you could delete anything in the Pool Manager (that just came along for the ride). In the survey manager, you could remove anything but the surveys you are deploying. Again, only if you need to remove something - won't hurt anything to have extra surveys out there dormant! |
L) Results of the Survey? Go to your Gradbook for the course - you should find a new column with the name of the survey. You can see which students took the survey (but you can't see there answers, naturally). Click on the link at the top of the column to see the results of the survey. |
M) You might just want to see a % breakdown for each question, with the answer percents (and how many unanswered). Here are some fake data (note, there were only two submissions - normally would would probably see a spread in %). A printout of this page could be saved as a result page for the Course Objectives survey. |
N) You might want to see a listing of all the answers (one line per student, but no student information). If that is the case, select this link - it will let you export the results into a CSV file {readable by Excel}. You would only select this choice if you needed to dig into the answers a little deeper than just the % values above. (For example to get an overall percentage.) |
Suppose you don't have access to the surveys, but you DO have access to an exported POOL of questions - what can you do with that? This means a little more work, because you have to create the survey from the pool - then you can rejoin the directions above, as though you had the survey copied over directly. 1) This assumes that you have obtained a "zip" file that contains the exported POOL from which you would create a survey - we need to import the pool, and then create the survey "manually". Go to your control panel and click on the POOL MANAGER link - then click on the IMPORT link. |
2) Browse to find the file you want to import. Click Submit, and then click OK on the next screen. |
3) Now go back to the Control Panel and click on the link for SURVEY MANAGER - click on the ADD SURVEY link. |
4) Enter the title you want to use, and then enter the description and Instructions. Here are some sample descriptions/instructions:
Then click the SUBMIT button at the bottom of the page. |
5) At the Survey Canvas - look in the ADD list and choose "FROM A QUESTION POOL OR ASSESSMENT" then click GO. |
6) Select the POOL you uploaded from the list - click the ALL checkbox (for which questions in the pool to display) and then click Search. |
7) Check the questions you want to use (usually all of them) - but you might have two "pages" of questions ... you have to SUBMIT the first page before you move on to the second page (this is like adding grades in Banner) - first submit the first set, then repeat steps 5 and 6 to get back to the list of questions and click NEXT and check the other questions, and then submit again. |
8) Once you have added the questions from the pool - scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the OK button. At this point, you could rejoin the instructions above - starting with step F - move to the content area of your site where you want the survey and then deploy it as shown above. |
