Bb8: How can I download results from a survey?

This assumes you have already created the survey, deployed it, and your students have taken the survey.

There are two types of "results" - one is a percentage-breakdown "report" - and the other is the raw data (in case you want to do other analysis on it, or combine it with other sections). I'll show you how to download both, and what they look like.

A) Go to the Control Panel for your Bb course, and go to the new "Grade Center"

Percentage Stats report

B) Find the column that contains the Survey you deployed. Click on the "down arrows" next to the title. Then select the "Attempts Statistics" item.

C) You will see all the questions on the page with the percentage breakdowns of the answers. But, there is a hidden catch when we try to print the page - it might only print one screen {but, since you can't "scroll" the printout - that doesn't really work for us!}.

So, when you go to print the results (say to the pdf printer driver), click the OPTIONS tab and click on the "ONLY THE SELECTED FRAME" option - and then click the PRINT button.

D) Here is a sample of what that percentage-reports page looks like ... question plus percentage breakdown of the answers.

"Raw" data download

You may be asked to also download the 'raw' data for the survey - this can be used to merge with other sections of the same course, or to do more advanced analysis on the results.

E) You will see all the questions on the page with the percentage breakdowns of the answers. But, there is a hidden catch when we try to print the page - it might only print one screen {but, since you can't "scroll" the printout - that doesn't really work for us!}.

So, when you

F) The default settings on the results page are the best ones to use:

  • TAB delimited makes it easy for Excel to open
  • BY USER arranges the data with one row per student (same as Bb7)
  • ONLY VALID is the best choice for a "one chance only" survey

Notice that you DON'T click the OK button ... click the Click to download results link - that will ... download the results!

G) I would suggest saving the file (instead of just opening it). You'll get a choice to change the file name if you want.

H) Here is an example of what that Excel datafile looks like.

There are three columns for each question - the ID number, the text of the question, and the answer (usually one of the radio button choices of the survey). These are shown grouped by the blue rectangles.

The first row is the header labels. After that, each row represents the questions and answers from a particular student.

What do you do with this raw data?

Soon (hopefully) there will be an excel "template" that you can use to "score" the raw datafile.
