LTU Laptops - These steps should have been done in the "Training Sessions." If not, or if you want to connect to the school email from your home machine, using Outlook Express, then read on. [Note, to connect from home, you must already have an ISP - internet service provider - that is, you need to be already out on the internet, then you could go tap LTU on the shoulder and ask for your mail - so, my assumption is that you already have a live connection to the internet.]
| A) Start OUTLOOK EXPRESS | (If the machine you are on hasn't been configured for the internet, you will have the INTERNET CONNECTION wizard start .. so go down to Step 'D below and follow the directions from there.) |
| [Assuming the Internet Connection Wizard doesn't start
.. if so, go to Step D.]
B) Go to the TOOLS menu, then the ACCOUNTS choice. |
|
| C) Select the MAIL tab. (You may see other things listed, if you have hotmail configured .. or it may be blank like this.) Click the ADD button, and select MAIL from the popup menu. |
|
| INTERNET CONNECTION WIZARD
D) This will start the Internet Connection Wizard - there are only a few answers that have to be "the magic answers" - the rest are very logical, and you would know them yourself. |
|
| E) Fill in the email address for the school |
|
| F) Here are the MAGIC VALUES {updated for Postoffice.ltu.edu} you need to see the school email server! Change the server type to IMAP, the incoming mail server is POSTOFFICE.LTU.EDU, and the outgoing server is MAIL.LTU.EDU. |
|
| G) For your "account" - put in your username
at the school, and enter your password for the network (your LTU4/CAMPUS
password). You can make a choice as to whether you want it to remember
your password or not .. for security reasons, you would not check that -
then each time you go check the mail, it will prompt you for your
password. If you check the box, Outlook Express will automatically
connect. (Note, if you change your password, you'll have to change it
here also, if you tell OE to "remember" it!)
**** Note : If you connect to the LTU mail server from outside the school network, you probably do NOT want to have OE remember your password (you will probably have trouble connecting). Click here to see directions to change the Password settings from within OE. |
|
| H) (If you were running Internet Connection Wizard, this should bring you back to Outlook Express with a list of your mail accounts.) You can set it to be the default (if it is the only one .. it will be, by default {ha ha}). You could highlight the account, and then select the PROPERTIES button, and change the name of it if you want (it will default to imap.ltu.edu). |
|
| I) Finally, once you close the Accounts dialog, you
should see the folders on the left panel looking something like this
(I've "closed" the directory trees by clicking the - signs
next to the branch.) [Note, you might have other "network"
accounts, like Hotmail, or something.]
If you double-click on the imap.ltu.edu account, it should go check your email (it will ask if you want to create FOLDERS first .. say yes! from then on, you should be able to download your mail from the vax to that computer). You can then follow the steps to SYNCHRONIZE YOUR ACCOUNT - this will pull the email message you have on the LTU mail server over to your new machine. |
|
| J) When I'm contacting the LTU Mail server from the
outside, it won't let me send or reply to an address that is outside the
LTU system?
You need to tell the mail server to "authenticate" the messages ... click here and look at the bottom of the image - you must check the box that says "My server requires authentication." in the Outgoing Mail Server box. |
